Canceling an Online Purchase in Israel: What to Check Before November Sales and How to Get a Refund

When buying a product remotely from an Israeli business, the standard cancellation right generally allows you to give notice within 14 days of receiving the product or the document containing the transaction details, whichever is later. If you change your mind, the business can generally charge up to 5% of the transaction price or NIS 100, whichever is lower. If there is a defect, a mismatch or another breach by the business, the rules may be more favorable to the consumer, and cancellation on those grounds does not entitle the business to the same cancellation fees.

The rules are not identical for every order, service or website. Ahead of the November 2026 sales, the most useful check is not just the size of the discount but who the seller is, what document you receive and whether an exception to the cancellation right applies. This guide provides general information based on rules checked on October 16, 2026, not legal advice for a specific case.

The Clock Starts When You Receive the Product or Document, Not Necessarily When You Buy

When purchasing a product online, the day you click the payment button is not always the start of the cancellation window. Under the Consumer Protection Law and Kol Zchut's updated explanation, the dates of receiving the product and receiving the transaction details document are considered, with the later date used. Keep both the order confirmation and proof of delivery. A message from the business saying the package has been dispatched is not necessarily proof that it was received.

As a rule, these are calendar days, not 14 business days. Kol Zchut explains that rest days count, but when the last day is a rest day, recess or public holiday, deadline calculation rules may postpone the end of the period. There is no point turning the final day into a legal test: once you have decided to cancel, send documented notice as early as possible.

A statutory cancellation right and a more generous commercial policy can coexist. If the store promised a longer return window, keep the promise as it appeared at the time of purchase. Do not rely on your memory of wording that briefly appeared on the screen.

Changing Your Mind and Finding a Defect Are Different Situations

Someone who receives exactly the product ordered but no longer wants it generally proceeds on the basis of a change of mind, subject to the cancellation right and its exceptions. In that case, the consumer generally bears the cost of returning the product to the business, and the business may charge the permitted cancellation fee.

A defect, a product that does not match what was presented, failure to deliver by the agreed date or another breach of the transaction's terms requires a different assessment. When a purchase is lawfully canceled for these reasons, the usual cancellation fee cannot be charged. The consumer makes the product available to the business at the place where it was delivered and notifies the business. This does not mean that every complaint requires an immediate refund without investigation, or that every problem discovered much later is handled under the same procedure.

For illustration only: a shirt was ordered in a particular size, but the business supplied another size. That is not the same situation as a shirt delivered in the size ordered that simply does not fit as the buyer hoped. The cancellation notice should describe what was ordered and what arrived, with a photo of the label. A clear factual account is more useful than the general statement "the product is unsuitable."

The Refund Should Be Money, Not a Promise Toward the Next Purchase

Under the Consumer Protection Law cancellation procedure, the business must return the money within 14 days of receiving the cancellation notice, subject to the relevant provisions, and cancel the charge. A voucher for another purchase is not an automatic substitute for a legally owed refund. However, a service transaction that has already begun may involve a proportional charge for what has already been provided, so the type of agreement must be checked.

Cancellation notice can be given through the methods permitted by law, including telephone, registered mail, email and an online method for transactions that can be entered into online. If the business has a fax machine, fax is also among the statutory notification methods. In practical terms, keep a copy you can present, showing the sending date, order identification and an explicit request to cancel. There is no need to turn a simple request into a legal threat.

Useful wording, for illustration only: "I wish to cancel order [order number], received on [date]. The reason for cancellation is [change of mind or description of the problem]. Please confirm receipt, provide instructions for returning the product and give details of the refund." Add the required identification details through the business's official channel, not a random link sent to you.

Some Products and Services Follow Different Rules

Exceptions to the right to cancel a distance sale because of a change of mind include perishable goods, products manufactured specifically for the consumer following the transaction, information as defined in the Computers Law, and recordable or reproducible products whose original packaging has been opened. These exceptions do not permit selling a defective product or describing it misleadingly. They concern a particular cancellation right and do not necessarily eliminate other rights.

The words "special order" on a website are not the end of the inquiry. Find out in advance what is actually being made specifically for you, rather than assuming that every product the supplier does not keep in stock automatically falls within that exception. Opening packaging does not always remove the cancellation right for every type of product, either. The type of product, the use made of it and the law applicable to it are what determine the position.

For a one-time service, the cancellation period is generally 14 days from the transaction date or receipt of the details document, whichever is later, provided at least two days that are not rest days remain before the service date. Accommodation, travel, vacation and leisure services have a specific restriction when cancellation falls within seven days that are not rest days before the service. An event ticket and a shirt delivered to your home therefore cannot be managed using the same calendar reminder.

Four Months in Some Cases, Under Defined Conditions

A person with a disability, a senior citizen aged 65 or older or a new immigrant may have a four-month cancellation period for a distance sale when entering the transaction involved a conversation with the business, including through electronic communication. An independent purchase on a website without a conversation does not automatically grant this extension. For this arrangement, the definition of a new immigrant relates to a certificate and the five-year period since it was issued.

Even within the extended period, exceptions and deadlines relative to service dates must be checked. The business may request appropriate proof of eligibility. Keep the relevant conversation or correspondence and submit only the required document through a secure channel. In a dispute, use Consumer Protection Authority guidance and appropriate advice rather than assuming that age alone answers every question.

A Hebrew Website Is Not Necessarily an Israeli Business

On an overseas website, do not assume the store will apply Israel's cancellation window or provide a return address in Israel. Check the seller's legal identity, its country of operation, cancellation terms and return shipping costs. On marketplaces, the particular seller may differ from the company operating the platform. Displaying prices in shekels does not answer these questions.

A dispute over which law applies to an international transaction can be complex. The practical consumer guidance is not to rely on Israeli enforcement as a substitute for reading the terms. Alongside contacting the seller, you can examine the dispute procedures offered by the platform and card issuer. For example, Isracard publishes separate inquiry procedures for nonreceipt of goods or services and for products that are defective or different from what was promised. The existence of a form does not guarantee a credit.

There is also a difference between disputing a transaction you did not make and a disagreement about a product you did order. Describe the real situation to the card issuer, and keep the order, promised delivery date and the response received from the seller.

A Discount Is Only Good if the Transaction Terms Are Good Enough

The Consumer Protection Law requires a seller announcing a special sale to clarify, among other things, the products included, the price before the special sale, the discount rate or resulting price, and the promotion's terms. This guide does not assume that a crossed-out price is necessarily the lowest price previously charged, and does not rely on a blanket 30-day rule. For a practical comparison, keep an earlier price for the same model and compare the total at checkout, including shipping.

Before paying, a focused check is enough: the business's identity, product details, delivery date, return terms and contact method. After paying, save what was displayed. And when a message arrives requesting an "additional shipping payment," first read the guide to identifying scam messages, rather than paying out of fear of losing the order.

If the business does not respect your rights, you can use the complaint submission service of the Consumer Protection and Fair Trade Authority. A complaint to the authority is not, by itself, a process that guarantees an individual refund, so also find out which procedure is appropriate for the remedy you seek.
