Meta VR Glasses Unveiled: About 100 Grams on Your Face, With Computing and Battery Separate

On September 23, Meta announced Meta VR Glasses, virtual reality glasses the company plans to sell in spring 2027 for $1,299.99 in the United States. According to the announcement, the glasses themselves weigh about 100 grams. That figure does not include the whole system: processing, battery and storage are housed in a separate connected unit.

This split is the heart of the proposition. Instead of carrying all the hardware on the face, users carry part of it elsewhere. For many, the deciding question will be how this arrangement feels after extended viewing or work, not just how many grams were removed from the frame.

The Screen Stays in Front of Your Eyes

Meta presents the glasses as a tool for watching, gaming and working with virtual screens. Control is described as based on voice, gaze and hand gestures. The external unit connects through an optical cable, and the company states up to three hours of high-resolution media playback.

These are manufacturer figures and usage promises. We have not independently tested total system weight, battery life or comfort. A dollar price is also not an Israeli launch price, and no verified local sale date is given here.

What the Headline Number Does Not Tell You

Consider a complete use scenario. Watching on a sofa requires a comfortable place for the external unit; working at a desk means checking cable movement and the ability to reach a phone or keyboard. Low weight on the face may be an advantage, but there is no reason to assume it alone resolves every comfort question.

A large virtual screen is not necessarily a good workspace for everyone, either. A useful test would include reading small text, switching windows and writing for an extended period. A demonstration video can explain the idea but cannot show how a particular user's eyes and hands will manage it.

A Buying Decision Still Awaits the Product

Until the planned launch, treat the device as an announcement, not a buying recommendation. It will be necessary to check which apps and content are actually available, what the price includes and what costs extra. Israeli users should also check warranty and service before ordering from abroad.

Meta's direction is clear: move some of the load from the head to a separate unit and expand use beyond short gaming sessions. Whether that makes the glasses a device people want to use every day is a question the final product will have to answer.
