Photoshop Studies: Design Your Own Marketing Poster

Hooray, you are approaching the celebratory end of your Photoshop studies. You have learned the software's interface and all its tools, how to import images and manipulate them, use masks, add text, work with typography, font types and font effects, shrink and enlarge letters, adjust letter and line spacing, arrange paragraphs, space and align images, work with transparency, export images for the internet and many other useful topics covered in your Photoshop course.

It is time to create a project for yourself, one that reflects everything you have learned. Make a poster, perhaps a beautiful A4 design. Choose a suitable font, think of appealing marketing text and select great images. You might find them in an image bank if they are not copyrighted, or buy images at minimal cost. Think about attractive frames to incorporate into your poster and gather enough material to help create something impressive, interesting and appealing. Consider where to put your details: diagonally at the top, or straight and serious at the bottom.

Playing with images and manipulations

Try taking several images and combining different manipulations, using masks, special brushes and attractive graphic elements. Perhaps incorporate text and apply suitable manipulations and effects to it too. Think of an interesting, unconventional design and the people you want to attract: a younger or older audience, businesses, children or market stallholders. You might consider elements that appeal to everyone's taste.

Composition and text

Start arranging all the elements in an attractive composition based on an idea already in your head. Add your chosen text and try combining it with other graphic elements, perhaps wrapping it around them. Try making 2 drafts with 2 different ideas. Add or remove a color, introduce color contrast, darken or lighten, and see whether attractive shading can add depth. Perhaps add glowing elements or points of light. Try filters too; they may contribute to the beautiful work you are trying to create.

A poster that catches the eye

The poster should be distinctive and interesting, giving viewers something to engage with. Use attractively designed bullet points to describe what you do and specialize in, whether drawing or interesting design. If you build websites, understand languages such as HTML and CSS or work with WordPress, say so. If you have worked with famous companies, publish links to them. Write this on the poster and position it neatly without overcrowding. You can publish it on Facebook or have it printed at a print shop and put it on noticeboards.
