Scholarships for Descendants of Central European Immigrants: Applications Open, With Two Tracks to Choose From

Students descended from immigrants from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia can apply for scholarships from the Association of Israelis of Central European Origin until November 20, 2026. The financial aid track offers NIS 7,500, and the excellence track NIS 10,000. Applicants may apply to only one track.

The Association of Israelis of Central European Origin opened applications for its 2026/27 scholarships on October 4. The difference between the tracks is NIS 2,500, but the choice does not begin with the amount: each track has its own target group and eligibility requirements, and both include a personal commitment. Meeting the criteria allows you to apply but does not guarantee an award.

According to the association's official scholarship page, the scholarships are intended for students at an institution approved by the Council for Higher Education. In addition to family origin, applicants must meet service requirements: at least 30 months of military service for men and 24 for women, or 24 months of national service.

The Financial Aid Track: From the Second Year of a Bachelor's Degree

The NIS 7,500 financial aid scholarship is open to applicants up to age 50. Bachelor's students can apply from their second year, and master's and doctoral students can also apply. Anyone starting the first year of a bachelor's degree this year therefore does not meet this track's study-year requirement.

Before completing an application, check previous awards too: under the terms, only one scholarship may be received per degree, whether through the financial aid or excellence track. Across bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies, the financial aid scholarship may be awarded at most twice. Medical studies have an exception allowing another application after receiving the bachelor's degree at the end of the first three years.

The Excellence Track: Your Average Is Only the Start

The NIS 10,000 scholarship is intended for master's or doctoral students up to age 45 with an average of at least 90 in the previous academic year. The association also requires evidence of excellence and exceptional achievements, such as scientific activity, scholarships or publications where applicable. Financial hardship is not a consideration in this track.

A qualifying average alone is therefore no reason to assume that the excellence track is preferable. Applicants eligible for both tracks should consider which one gives them a stronger application, since they cannot apply to both in the same year. The excellence scholarship may be awarded only once during master's and doctoral studies, alongside the limit of one scholarship per degree.

What You Receive and What You Commit To

Both tracks require 45 hours of personal service for the association or its mutual aid organization. Under the current cycle's terms, these must be completed within nine months of notification of eligibility. Receiving the scholarship also requires attendance at the ceremony scheduled for March 25, 2027.

This is a detail worth adding to your calendar while exploring the options. Before committing, ask the association which activities are offered this year, where they take place and how they fit around your studies. Do not rely on activity schedules from previous years.

The association also lists preference criteria, including family ties to members of the relevant organizations who have paid membership fees for the past three years, involvement in the association's heritage, community volunteering or more than 60 days of reserve service. These are preference factors, not a guarantee of a scholarship or a substitute for the eligibility requirements.

How to Apply Without Leaving an Important Detail Until the Last Minute

The application form's login page can be reached through the association's website. Entry requires an identity number, mobile phone and verification on the site. The mandatory document list appears in the form; the association stresses that the committee will consider only applications containing all required documents as clear, complete scans.

Open the form well before November 20, check which supporting documents are required and gather them in advance. If a service requirement, previous award or family detail is unclear, you can contact [email protected] before submitting. Choosing the right track begins with an application you can support with documents, not just the headline scholarship amount.
