TikTok and the NFL Renew Partnership, Expanding Ads Alongside League Content

TikTok and the National Football League announced the renewal of a multiyear partnership on September 2. One change of interest to advertisers is the expansion of Pulse Premiere to league clubs' content, alongside content on the NFL account. According to the official announcement, the move allows ads to be placed alongside sports content from the league and its clubs.

The partnership also includes GamePlan experiences and additional content around games and off-field stories. For a brand, this is an opportunity to explore a presence within an existing audience interest. It still needs to clarify exactly what it is buying.

Advertising alongside a game is not sponsoring it

Distinguish between placing an ad in a content environment and having a commercial relationship with the organization featured in that content. The announcement describes media opportunities; it does not give every advertiser league sponsor status or permission to use a player's name in an advertisement.

This distinction affects the creative work. A message can appeal to sports fans without suggesting that a particular player endorses the product. If the campaign requires team logos or official footage, clarify separately what has been agreed with the rights holders. Do not infer permission from the ad placement alone.

Which part of the audience do you want to reach?

The audience for sports content is not necessarily uniform. An advertiser might seek people interested in the game itself, its surrounding culture or its personalities. These are possible directions, and the choice should appear in the brief before a format is selected.

An Israeli business operating abroad can start with simple questions: which market does it sell to, does the landing page suit the language and is the offer relevant to someone encountering it within a sports video? The league's popularity does not answer these questions.

What the media proposal should include

To compare proposals, request details of the markets, placement environment, targeting options and reporting. Know whether you are buying a specific placement, a broad content package or exposure that does not guarantee an appearance alongside every video.

Measurement should match the goal. A brand awareness campaign is not assessed in exactly the same way as one designed to drive an immediate purchase. In both cases, counting views alone does not explain whether the audience understood the offer or took the next step because of it.

The agreement adds opportunities for advertisers to reach NFL audiences on TikTok. Their value will depend on how well the content, message and audience fit together, rather than simply appearing next to a familiar sports brand.
