TikTok Expands Out of Phone in Europe, Bringing Creator Videos to Public Screens

TikTok announced an expansion of its Out of Phone program in Europe on September 3 through six additional partners. According to the company, the expansion covers the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Spain and Italy, bringing creator content to screens in places such as shopping centers, gyms and travel settings.

Advertisers are offered sponsorship opportunities and ways to extend creator content beyond the platform, including digital signage. The announcement does not include an Israeli launch. It does raise a practical question for anyone planning a multichannel campaign: does a video designed for scrolling on a phone still make sense when someone encounters it on the way somewhere else?

The file stays the same; the viewing environment changes

On a phone, viewers hold the screen and can choose to keep watching. In front of a shopping center screen, they may be walking past, standing at an angle or seeing only the middle of the video. Moving the original file therefore does not necessarily mean it is fully adapted to the new medium.

Check whether people can understand the product without spoken explanation, see it from a distance and receive the main message in time. Where viewers can join at any moment, a story that relies entirely on its first second may leave them without context. This is a possible planning issue, not a claim about the program's performance.

An instruction such as clicking a link also does not automatically translate to a screen without a personal interface. Choose an action that suits the location and the length of the encounter.

Where the creator fits in

Partners named in the announcement include Alight Media, DooH it, Powerpill, Zoom Media, Next-Gen Media and C-Screens. Each network adds a different viewing environment, so content should be assessed against the screens actually being purchased.

A brand working with a creator should define both the content versions and the agreed scope of use in advance. This helps avoid producing a video that excels in the feed, only to discover later that there is no suitable material for the wider format or the audience passing the screen.

How to compare channels

Platform view counts should not be combined with estimated exposure on a screen network without examination. Before comparing them, understand how each number is calculated, what it measures and whether the audiences overlap.

A useful test can focus on a defined area or period, with a consistent message and an outcome metric chosen in advance. The aim is to establish what physical distribution added, not just show a larger number in a report.

Out of Phone expands the places where people can encounter creator content. The marketing work begins with adapting it to that new encounter: what someone can see, understand and do where the screen is located.
